Auckland's Getting a Korean Festival
Celebrating the best food, music, art and film from the far east nation.
We're spoilt for choice with the presence of Korean culture in Auckland; first-rate barbecue joints claim both sides of the bridge, K-Pop juggernauts regularly visit our shores and Korean-inspired street food vendors are leading the charge with new culinary mashups. This October the far east nation will be thrust further into the spotlight with the inaugural Korea Festival.
Five free events will make up the festival, celebrating the best Korean food, music, art and film. Highlights across the month include cooking classes with television chefs Karena and Kasey Bird, Jason Kim of Cassia and Martin Harrap from SkyCity; master Ottchil artist Sungsoo Kim who will bring his traditional Korean art to the Gus Fisher Art Gallery; and five days of free Korean movies showing at Academy Cinemas.
It wouldn't be a Korean festival without the nation's pop music phenomenon, K-Pop. The glitzy genre will be represented at an Auckland University contest on October 4 with a B-boy crew, the Dohnanyi Piano Quintet, and pianist Jane Sohn together with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra.
Korea Festival takes place during the whole month of October, 2016. To see the full list of events, visit www.facebook.com/rokconsulateakl.
