Modern Māori fusion eatery Pūhā & Pākehā found a permanent home in Grey Lynn's old Surrey Dairy last year. Established by husband and wife team Jarrad and Belinda Mckay, the eatery's kaupapa is to bring native New Zealand ingredients to the forefront via Māori-inspired dishes.

To further showoff our nation's vibrant culture, the eatery is now hosting te reo Māori lessons every Tuesday night. Attendees will learn te reo Māori in a casual, relaxed format suitable for both absolute beginners and those already with some knowledge of our native tongue.

The first course runs for eight weeks from 7 May to 2 July from 6–8pm. The sessions will touch on helpful everyday phrases and the correct pronunciation of words and place names, the process of introducing yourself, how to greet/thank people using a mihi in writing and in person, and insight into some of the tikanga of Māori culture.

Tickets are $25 per person per session, which includes a sample of Pūhā & Pākehā's modern Māori kai for dinner — think tua tua fritters with kina chilli chive mayo, kūmara and coconut bites, and the popular Aotearoa reuben sandwich. Numbers are limited. Interested parties can register at puhaandpakeha.co.nz/te-reo-sessions

Find Pūhā & Pākehā at 108 Surrey Crescent, Grey Lynn.
