An idle queue, primed tongs, flimsy plastic vessels, and a cabinet full of domestic sub-$2 versions of rice-glug, teriyaki-something and rock-hard wasabi; we’re talking about sushi. And, thanks to the anticipated touch down of a celebrated sushi saviour, and one of Europe’s most celebrated chefs, the all-time favourite lunch-hour staple is about to be given a new lease of life.

Yokohama-born Endo Kazutoshi is a third generation sushi chef who learned his craft from some of Japan’s top sushi masters. Over his 21-year career he has served an apprenticeship at five-time world’s best restaurant El Bulli and been responsible for the sushi at internationally acclaimed Japanese restaurant group Zuma in London, New York, Miami, Dubai, Hong Kong and Istanbul.

On the eve of opening his first restaurant in the UK, the master sushi chef is set to curate a special degustation selection of nigiri right here in Auckland. Over two days and six sittings, sushi lovers will be able watch Endo Kazutoshi in action at MASU by Nic Watt in Federal Street.

Across March 16 - 17, Kazutoshi will serve two ten-course lunch sessions and four twelve-course dinners, $100 and $120 per head respectively. Fellow dining guests at MASU on these dates will be also able to purchase a special Endo sushi platter with three pieces of nigiri for $20.

Bookings are limited to 96. Phone MASU on 09 363 6278 or email [email protected] to make your booking.
