Ponsonby's Golden Dawn: Tavern of Power Is Closing
Living up to its temporary status, seven years later.
Since appearing as a corner-shop under construction with rubbish bag-lined windows seven years ago, Ponsonby's Golden Dawn: Tavern of Power has always been considered a pop-up. While three years short of a decade may seem a touch too long to fall in the pop-up category, the bar/eatery/music venue/provider of good times is living up to the temporary status.
The bar's owners announced the imminent closure via the Golden Dawn Facebook page yesterday afternoon, stating that at the end of March 2018 they will be, "saying sayonara." And while the end is still six months away, they intend to "surprise you, treat you, feed you, water you, and tender loving care for you like never before."
No word has been given about new plans for the site, other than to "keep watching this space". There may be hope for future happy, fuzzy and weird vibes.
See the full statement below.
Dear friends,
There's no easy way to say this, because what we're about to say seemingly defies all logic and sense, but it's with heavy hearts that we have decided to scratch our seven year itch, and bring The Golden Dawn: Tavern of Power to a graceful but extraordinary conclusion. The pop-up that never popped is going out with a bang. At the end of March 2018, we're saying sayonara.
Throughout the past seven years, we have been humbled beyond belief at the response from our community of freaks and geeks, and the overwhelming amount of love that you all have shown our little hippie headquarters has made every second of this absolutely worth it. However, even the best things in life come to an end, and we've made the excruciating decision to ride out on the crest of this beautiful wave filled with rainbow coloured dolphins, and to pursue the wild new horizons that lay ahead of us.
Naturally, we could never have done this without the help of some truly wonderful team members. To our magnificent staff, past and present: you have been our muscles, our batting eyelashes, and our beating heart. It's no exaggeration to say that we've become a giant family over the years, and holy shit there are going to be tears at the end.
And YOU… We really, really love you, and we're gonna miss you so much. Don't be mad, it's not you, it's us. This will all be for the best… we're burning down this castle, and from its ashes will rise a flock of phoenixes. All hail the new dawn. The power is in your hands now.
But! No tears just yet; the end is still six months away! We intend to surprise you, treat you, feed you, water you, and tender loving care for you like never before. Keep watching this space, and don't be a stranger. Good grief, it's been so much fun.
Amen, amen, amen.
