Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, bringing the original film's central duo back together. Practical Magic 2 follows a multigenerational family of witches who have been cursed to live without love for centuries. Breaking the spell means confronting dark secrets and making sacrifices for one another, so their tradition of romantic entanglements and magical trouble looks set to continue. The story also draws on Alice Hoffman's The Book of Magic, the fourth novel in her Practical Magic series. For fans of the original, seeing the sisters face their family's curse again is a big part of the appeal. Expect more witchcraft, family ties and the romantic trouble that helped make the first film a cult favourite. Buy or rent on Prime Video, YouTube or Apple TV. Now, Insidious: Out of the Further opens the door to the Further once again, this time with a new family at the centre of the story and a major reunion of spirits and entities from across the franchise's history. Gemma is a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she grew up, until she discovers she can travel into the Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the series. The real trouble starts when she realises she can bring the things living there back into the real world, and the entities begin to take notice of the power she holds. Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, with Lin Shaye returning as Elise Rainier. As Gemma's connection to the Further threatens to turn the real world into a playground for its demons, the return of familiar entities gives longtime fans another reason to tune in. For young fans who know every character by name and can identify a dinosaur at 20 paces, the combination should make for a natural family movie-night choice. That is, until a mysterious radio transmission gives you a reason to venture beyond the safety of home. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Dog Stars is set in a brutal post-apocalyptic world where Hig, a young pilot, lives in an isolated homestead with Bangley, a military survivalist. They've built an efficient existence together, but when Hig picks up the transmission, he ventures into the unknown in search of its origin and the hope and humanity he still believes exist. It's a darker take on the survival story, with Hig risking the relative security he's established to find out what's waiting beyond his isolated corner of the world. Based on Peter Heller's novel, the film stars Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, alongside Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong. Their friendship is put to the test as they face the possibility of losing the experiences that have shaped their bond. Unless, of course, the jungle turns out to have other ideas. Beware Boiúna follows a team of young doctors embarking on a humanitarian mission to the Amazon rainforest. Each has their own agenda, and their arrival isn't welcomed by everyone. Things take a dangerous turn when their visit awakens the Boiúna, an ancient mythical predator that hunts on land and in water. With human threats and an enormous creature standing in their way, the doctors find themselves fighting for survival in an environment where danger can come from more than one direction. Drawn from the Amazonian legend of a giant serpent said to rule the rivers, it's a creature feature where the jungle itself feels like part of the threat. [caption id="attachment_1154358" align="alignnone" width="1920"] Madman[/caption] Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma — Comedy, Horror The title alone suggests this isn't going to be a particularly restrained horror film. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma follows a slasher franchise that's been limping along through years of slapdash sequels and waning fan interest, prompting a young director to take over its latest instalment. The director's attempt to revive the franchise leads her to the original film's now-reclusive star. Their meeting draws the two women into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear and delirium, taking the story beyond a straightforward reboot. Jane Schoenbrun, the filmmaker behind I Saw the TV Glow, directs this horror-comedy starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. With its story about a slasher revival that takes an unexpected turn, the film has a self-aware angle for viewers who enjoy horror that plays with the genre's conventions. Buy or rent on Prime Video, YouTube or Apple TV from Wednesday, November 4. Look out for Mega Movie Week deals wherever you buy or rent movies from Thursday, October 22.
