This Just In: Jetstar Is Scrapping Free Overhead Baggage for Local and International Flights
The budget airline is introducing paid overhead locker access, replacing weight limits with a size-based carry-on system from February 2027.
The days of loading up your carry-on bag to skip the cost of check-in luggage are coming to an end on Jetstar, with the budget airline announcing that it will soon begin charging passengers to stow their bags in the overhead lockers.
From Tuesday, February 2, 2027, all Jetstar domestic and international economy class airfares will shift to the new pricing model, with passengers' fee-free baggage limited to "one underseat bag such as a backpack, handbag or laptop bag."
As such, customers bringing a larger bag on board will need to purchase 'Priority Carry-on', with prices starting from $25 for one-way domestic flights and increasing to $50 or more for one-way international journeys, such as Cairns to Tokyo Narita.
At the same time, Jetstar is removing its seven-kilogram carry-on weight limit as of February 2027, with the airline saying it represents a "shift from a strict weight limit to a simpler, size-based carry-on baggage model, similar to other leading low-fares carriers around the world."
"By giving customers an underseat bag with the option to add Priority Carry-on, we can make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time," said Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully in a media release, which added the change was based on extensive research and feedback from customers and crew.
Meanwhile, Jetstar's parent company, Qantas Group, is reportedly considering offshoring up to 1000 roles. Although no final decision has been made, AI-led changes could affect the airline's workers in marketing, finance, human resources and other areas, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
