Kings Cross nightclubs are the stuff of legend, both for those who experienced them firsthand and otherwise. Think a packed strip night after night, with revellers moving from one spot to the next, following the sounds of house, trance, hip hop and rock. While the Glittering Mile has evolved, a new venue hopes to capture some of its storied late-night energy, riding an upswing of improving vibes around Sydney's nightlife in recent times. Now open on level two of the Potts Point Hotel in the heart of Kings Cross, GOOD ROOM isn't cutting corners. Serving up a weekly underground disco and house residency, DJs Aidan Bega and Taras Pirojenko, aka Ghostlike, are behind the new breed of venue, where music, architecture and hospitality share the space in equal measure. Yet what rises above is how the pair have shaped the experience around the simple pleasure of dancing. "We're going to be breaking a few rules with this one. Don't expect weekly flyers with DJ lineups; we've carefully curated a small team of only the finest selectors," say Bega and Pirojenko — the venue's resident DJs. "To find out who's performing on the night, though, you'll just have to show up. Even with the prolific roster that we've put together, the DJ isn't the star of the show; it's the dance floor and the people on it." With the venue opening from 10pm every Saturday, punters can expect nights to kick off with house and disco, before the DJ that appears behind the decks rinses minimal funk and dance numbers. Then, as the night wears on, techno bangers carry the crowd to closing time. Don't stress — you won't be booted out as the party ramps up. GOOD ROOM is making this an almost-sunrise affair, with the venue running weekly until 5am. What's more, this isn't the place for bottle parades or distracting spectacles. "As Kings Cross continues its re-emergence as a key part of Sydney's nightlife, GOOD ROOM offers a return to the kind of after-dark energy the precinct was built on — late nights, great tracks and rooms full of people there for the music," add Potts Point Hotel General Manager Joel McDermott and Marketing Director Ollie-May Collins. With everything in the space secondary to the dance floor — it takes centre stage between booths and the bar — guests can also expect top-notch sound and lighting to elevate the experience. So, with the final remaining lockout laws scrapped in January this year, GOOD ROOM is perfectly timed to kickstart a new chapter for the late-night precinct with a whole new generation.
