Ever wondered what music everyone else in the neighbourhood is listening to, or perhaps how many other people are blasting Viking crab-core?? Well...

By crunching some numbers, software developer Paul Lamere has revealed the distinctive listening preferences of each state in the USA. Lamere sampled the music patterns of around a quarter million listeners that have a zip code associated with a range of music streaming services. He then compared the differences across regions and states to figure out which artists were distinctively popular in different locations.

The above map shows which artist enjoys the most outsized support in each state. The results vary from old-time rockers Phish and the Grateful Dead in the north eastern states to British musician, producer and DJ Bonobo in California and country songwriter in Texas. Auckland’s The Naked and Famous get a slice of state-side love, coming in as the overall most listened to act in Colorado.

Lamere also built an app that compares how music preferences differ between two regions. The service is yet to include countries outside the US, but here's hoping some others share my secret crab core love.
