Don't trout yourself when it comes to the fish menu.

Overview

It's important to know where your food comes from. Only recently we developed a connection with a wagyu-raised cow from the outskirts of Tauranga— and boy did it taste lovely! But knowing where your food comes from is not only important for deliciousness reasons but also for the environmental balance of the terrestrial floating orb keeping us alive: Mother Earth.

Our seafood industry is one particular element that isn't always as environmentally-friendly as shouted from the rooftops. Luckily, environmental organisation Forest & Bird has launched an app to help consumers make sustainable seafood choices when at the supermarket or in a restaurant. Never trout yourself again.

The free-to-download Best Fish Guide is the country's only independent consumer guide to sustainable seafood. Based on stone cold facts and data from marine scientists it uses a traffic light system to rank seafood on a range of criteria: fish stocks, bycatch of other species, and the impact on marine habitats. As a boiled down example: arrow squid caught by jigging is a good seafood choice; bottom trawl-caught squid is not.

As well as analysing more fish species than ever before, including freshwater species for the first time, the app features a selection of recipes from some of the country's top chefs so you can have your arrow squid and cook it too.
