Overview

Here is one for those of you with a sweet tooth. The Wholesale Boot Company is putting on Bees in the City, a beekeeping masterclass lunch, complete with honey, hives and a hearty three course lunch.

For anyone unfamiliar with WBC, the eatery was founded in 2013 in an art deco style boot factory on Victoria Street. Despite its grungy sounding history, the room is bright, with massive antique windows that offer ideal people-watching views of Wellington CBD. If you’re not into stalking strangers then you might opt to perch at the oyster bar, where you will be rewarded with unobstructed views into the open kitchen and really feel like part of the busy production process. The menu is based on using seasonal, local ingredients to produce high quality, flavoursome dishes. Largely seafood-based, WBC specialises in local oysters ans shellfish, so it will be interesting to see how the chefs manage to combine their signature dishes with honey during their Wellington on a Plate lunch.

Diners will be taught all about urban beekeeping from WBC’s master beekeeper, and they will even be able to inspect the hives. Each course of the meal incorporates the locally sourced honey in an innovative and experimental way, and each plate will be accompanied by a specifically selected beverage. This one is selling out quick, with half the shows already full, so if you’re a honey-lover then get onto it, pronto.
