Overview

Now in it’s sixth year, Burger Wellington is an absolute highlight of Wellington on a Plate. Both delicious and affordable, it gives an opportunity for everyone from the cash-strapped students to the YoPros with their disposable incomes to get involved in this pinnacle of the Wellington food calendar.

With over 80 burgers in this year’s Burger Wellington, the competition is fiercer than Beyoncé. Voting starts on 14 August, and will run for the duration of Wellington on a Plate. With such an incredible array of burgers, it’s close to impossible to pick which ones to try. While the brave may try to conquer them all, here are a few that may be worthy of anyone with a normal appetites’ attention:

Portlander’s “The Hunter Games” ($25) is a venison patty that comes with a location tracker that lets you square in on where that delicious venison you are demolishing lived and grazed. Morbid and delicious.

Charley Noble’s “Ebisu Burger” ($26) is a Moana Pacific fish burger with chutney and Jap Mayo, in a squid ink bun.

Coene’s Provisions “The Filthy Swine” ($24) will divide the true pork lovers from the rest, with pork sausage patty, pork coppa, bacon, black pudding, wild pork salami, pulled pork, served in a brioche bun with hot sauce & pickles.

Ti Kouka are also giving pork a crack (ha), with “Aporkalypse Now” ($23) – a slow roasted, bourbon glazed pork shoulder, served with ginger ale bacon, apply, and smoked BBQ mayo in a Leeds Street Bakery grilled bun with hot sauce, crackling and pickles.

Dragonfly’s “Wong’s White Burger” ($20) is served in a white bao bun, with wasabi slaw, chilli jam, and a prawn shui mai patty, served with a side of prawn chips and nori salt.

Finally, Little Beer Quarter gets really alternative on us with “Let’s do Brunch” ($23.50) being served for lunch and dinner. The burger has a black pudding patty with bacon, havarti, tomato baked beans and fried egg in a waffle bun, with hash brown nuggets and hollandaise.

It’s truly impossible to narrow down the incredible range of things the various eateries have considered worthy of putting between two buns, and spending some time on the website is an essential part of the Burger Wellington experience. So get researching, get eating, and get voting!
