Overview
Pinky Fang and Tiny Portions are teaming up for an aspic-ious exhibition at Thistle Hall: Dinner Party.
Illustrator Pinky Fang and sculptor Rose Young have teamed up to create an ode to the 1970s phenomenon of the dinner party. The decade is well known as a heinous period for cuisine — think 'candle salad'. Think questionable dishes involving bananas and canned meat. Think microwaved everything, including baking. Think aspic (effectively all of the elements of a roast dinner suspended in jelly). The mind boggles/shudders.
This visual love story to one of the most gastronomically horrific concepts of the 20th century will be rendered in miniature sculptures of 1970s dinner party food, while Fang has created paintings of various 70s dishes to pair with the sculptures, hung in repurposed opshop frames. Young staged a particularly successful 2017 Wellington On A Plate exhibition too, so you might recognise her work.
Think of it as culinary social history. Opening night on September 11 will be an eve of appropriate 70s snacks and sunken conversation pit chat, and the chance to view the exhibition in its full glory.
