Overview

The Goethe-Institut, a worldwide association promoting German language and culture, is hosting its annual German Film Festival in Wellington. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and this year's programme of 25 films - all with English subtitles - is particularly meaty.

Goethe-Institut director Bettina Senff says the "new look" festival will feature recent-releases from established and up-and-coming directors from a range of genres, in addition to a jazz performance and yodelling workshop.

Senff says: "We want to show different faces and facets from modern Germany. I think there could be a lot of people who have never had the chance to see a German film on screen."

If you're one of them, why not head along to the opening night film? Sound of Heimat follows New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm to Germany in his quest to discover and live the roots of German folk music and has received near-perfect reviews. If you're a fan of Rialto's Films for Foodies series, don't miss the screening of Love Streaks (with a top-notch pre-film feed) on Wednesday 17th.
