Overview

Some duos are just iconic: chips and Wattie's tomato sauce; hot chocolates and marshmallows; hot dogs and… beer? Okay maybe that's a stretch, but it's still the duo on show during Wellington's HopDog Festival this week.

Bars and pubs around the capital are teaming locally brewed NZ beers with their own bespoke hotdog creations, and you're invited to munch your way around each one.

Down at St John's, they're pairing an ice-cold Tuatara Hefeweizen with their own 'Brat Dog': a mix of chargrilled pork bratwurst with mango kasundi mustard, nori mayo and kimchi. That combo will set you back $30.

If you're looking to keep dinner under a $20, head to Jack Hackett's Irish Pub or the Cambridge, who are each slinging a dog-and-beer combo for $15 a piece. At Jack Hackett's they're smothering a grilled frank with chilli beef, mozzarella, ketchup and mustard. Meanwhile, at the Cambridge, you'll be chowing down on a frankfurter with pickled fennel, mustard seed and whipped cheddar. Both are matched with a frosty pint of Emerson's Super Quench.

Overall there are 44 venues taking part in the festival, so head to the official event page to find the dog that takes your fancy.  Running now until Sunday, June 19, put one — or all — on your list for this weekend's eats.
