Overview

Presented by the Embassy of Japan in New Zealand and the Japan Foundation, the Japanese Film Festival will make its return to Wellington this September.

This year's festival offers a mixture of drama, action and comedy direct from the motherland. Highlights include: What a Wonderful Family!, a heartwarming comedy from director Yoji Yamada; The Magnificent Nine, a samurai comedy based on a true story from the middle Edo Period; Ask This of Rikyu, a historical tapestry based on the Naoki Prize-winning novel by Yamamoto Kenichi; and The Mohican Comes Home, a family drama which outlines the homecoming of a death metaller after seven years.

The best art about the festival is that all films are entirely free to attend. Tickets will be available two hours before the start of each film until they run out. All movies are preceded by a short documentary about Japanese culture, starting 10 minutes prior to each screening.
