Revitalisation of Maori Astronomical Knowledge
How astronomy affected Maori cosmology, agriculture, architecture, navigation, and calendrical systems.
Overview
The first time we heard of SMART we thought it was a think tank run by geniuses a la A Beautiful Mind. We weren't too far from the mark. In fact, SMART is way cooler than that. It is the Society of Maori Astronomy Research and Traditions.
SMART is a group that was established to revitalise Maori astronomical knowledge, in particular the traditional calendar. This knowledge has been very important and used in a myriad of different ways - such as in Maori language, navigation, architecture and agriculture.
A talk by SMART will be held on July 18 and 22.
