Overview

Usually, art installations are a feast for the eyes, but a new pop up art installation is set to take you on a journey through your nose to a galaxy far, far away.

Artist and "aromatic explorer" Nathan Taare (Ngāti Porou) has conjured up the scent of another whole universe with his new three-day installation Smells Like Outer Space, set to take place at the Thomas King Observatory next to the Space Place planetarium this weekend.

Providing a sensory experience for people who are blind or have low vision, Taare says the unique free installation is based on "scientific data, Māori astronomy, science fiction, astrology and his own wild imaginings" to conjure smells of our universe and beyond.

Once you leave the exhibition, you'll be guided back down to earth with a specially developed scented trail in the adjoining Wellington botanic gardens.

Smells Like Outer Space is set to run at the Thomas King Observatory in Kelburn from Friday 18 March – Sunday 20 March, 10am – 4pm daily. It's free to attend, but organisers say a koha is always appreciated.
