Overview

Taking off the Bird Suit is the feminist’s rendition of Whose Line is it Anyway?. Some of Wellington’s most talented actresses explore themes of feminism and equality through theatre sports and comedic improvisation. The title of the show is inspired by Canadian novelist and poet, Margaret Atwood’s 'Siren Song'. The piece has feminist connotations, and is told from the perspective of one of the sirens from Homer’s epic The Odyssey. The siren complains that looking “picturesque and mythical” is no longer enough, and wishes to move beyond the “boring song”. She speaks of stripping away her bird suit in order to be perceived as an equal.

The actresses in the show attempt to convey this same message through their improvisations. Led by Christine Brooks, and starring Abby Howells, Jennifer O’Sullivan and Susan Williams amongst other talent, the cast is full of theatre gurus who are excited to illustrate their own ideas of feminism through improv. Brooks was inspired to create the feministic show after the disappointing lack of females in the Comedy Festival line-up this year. She wanted to give local women the opportunity to showcase their talent and send a message at the same time. What’s more, she is so passionate about her cause, that all profits from the show are to be donated to Wellington Rape Crisis.
