Overview
Te Papa is celebrating the arrival of the Māori New Year, with its special, free event Matariki Hiki Ahi.
Sharing stories of renewal, attendees will discover old Māori legends and practices around the New Year through vivid performances, and are invited to participate as well.
The Red Gates bar will be serving drinks and food, and free soup and rolls will be available to those who come along. You're also welcome to bring small tokens that represent something special to you, to be used during the performance, as well as a blanket and cushion.
The evening begins with the retelling of a Māori story, complete with a fire dance, followed by a moment for you to share your images or symbols of your life, history or family.
Following this is the story of the Māori god Tāne, and the introduction of the Maramataka (Māori Luna calendar) and Matariki, the cluster of stars that signifies the beginning of a new year. This is a chance to acknowledge those gone and the year that has come to an end.
The final story is that of Hiwi-i-te-rangi and turning to the new year. Reflecting on all that's been and what's to come, here you can write down your thoughts, hopes and dreams for the new year.
The event is family friendly and an opportunity to come, learn and share.
