Overview

When Te Papa closed its doors to the nature exhibits in early 2018, Wellington cried. Losing a cheap first-date spot, a place to shelter from the wind and the best place in town to marvel at a colossal squid, Wellingtonians were suddenly faced with a blocked entrance and a promise of a brighter, more exciting exhibition. And now, those doors have been opened.

Te Taiao promises a more engaging, interactive science exhibit for locals — and they've even kept the Quake House. But just to show Wellington how grateful they are for all their continued support, Te Papa is hosting an adults-only evening for its new and improved science exhibition.

The adults-only evening is jam-packed with features to keep even the most museum-averse entertained. Alice Fenessy, local artist and educator, will be hiding out in the treehouse with those who want to draw a creepy crawly or two. Previous crowd favourite Fishhook will be hosted again, and tour guides will be loosely hanging around explaining how Te Taiao was made.

But for those who want to party at Te Papa, they've still got you covered. Always keeping it local, Wellington reggae band Tunes of I will be performing alongside DJ Panda. A pop-up bar will be open all night long in the Wellington foyer, and there'll even be a photobooth with a nature twist — perfect for your Insta-story.

So, if you want a cheap night out, or if you've been that one friend desperate to know what's behind those closed doors on Level Two, come along to Te Taiao: Nature After Dark on Friday, 7 June.
