Overview

Often tragically deemed America's most overlooked musical genius, Nina Simone's story is finally told by director Jeff L Lieberman. One of the most recognisable voices in jazz, Simone's talent as singer, songwriter and pianist was unable to be extinguished, even in the context of her often-difficult life. Her journey from the deeply divided South, a world of segregation and discrimination, to the worlds of classical music, jazz joints and international concert halls is told delicately by Lieberman. He delves into Simone's artistry, her bold statements, her beloved works and her inimitable style. Set against a backdrop of the 1960's fight for racial equality, the film is a rich historical work told through the eyes of one of America's most beloved songstresses.

The Amazing Nina Simone is part of Lighthouse Cinema Cuba's jazz screenings throughout the festival.
