Overview

Many Wellingtonians will know Max Patté's works without realising it. His sculpture, Solace in the Wind, seen leaning into the elements on the Wellington waterfront is an iconic piece, created during his period of contemplative, inward portraiture sculpture.

His new venture, Lightworks, an inaugural Wellington exhibition to be held in Shed 11, takes a decidedly more outward and external view. With a strong focus on elemental directions such as light and space, his works transform the gallery using spatial design, new technologies and media to immerse the audience. Enlisting the help of Weta Workshop's electronics technician team, custom built technology will micro-control the colours featured in his Lightworks exhibition over a four to five-hour cycle. The imperceptible slow fade will morph the tone of the room, directing the mood of the piece. The use of fabricated walls and ceilings within the space will alter audience's orientations further.

Inspired by his travels along the coastline of his Island Bay home, he draws on elements of the skies above Wellington to reflect the changing colours and lights of his environment.

Patté's works have such prominent patrons as Ian McKellen, Stephen Fry and Charles Saatchi. Coupled with his artistic direction and prospect of such an innovative presentation of his works, you'll be wanting to note this exhibition as one to catch.
