Overview

Roving performances, activations, breakout dances and a smattering of Shakespeare are all breathing life back into the capital after a long year of lockdowns.

As part of the council's ongoing Summer Sampler series, this weekend Wellington's waterfront will become a circus stage, featuring some of the city's top performers from perfomance company Spark and Flare.

For those looking for a little evening spectacle, on Saturday, December 18, Wellington Firebenders are set to light up the evening at the Frank Kitts Amphitheatre. The showcase from some of Pōneke's best professional fire artists is sure to bring the heat.

If you're more into enjoying your spectacle in the sunshine, on Sunday, December 19, take a break from any last minute Christmas shopping and catch circus artist Nicole Maisey, a former big-top performer now dancing her way around Wellington's waterfront.

There will be plenty more events and activations taking place over the next few weeks, all outside to cater to the city's orange light status in the COVID-19 traffic light framework.

Eli Joseph, Spark and Flare creative director said in a statement the goal was to find a solution to a tough time for the creative community.

"The fun challenge is finding ways to utilise the waterfront as a space for performance and letting artists share their work, while keeping everyone safe in a way that doesn't feel like the audience is being held at arm's length," he said.

The Summer Sampler will run until January 30, with more information set to become available through Facebook, Eventfinda, and the Wellington City Council website as more events are planned.
