Boutique milk company Lewis Road Creamery is best-known for playing its part in 'The Great Artisanal Chocolate Milk Shortage of 2014', when supermarket refrigerators across the country were wiped out and security guards could be found protecting the remaining liquid gold in the dairy aisle.

While the company has spent the past few years cementing itself in the dairy world with gorge-worthy butter, ice cream and chocolate liqueur, it is now taking the moo out of milk with the launch of its own lactose-free chocolate milk.

Just like the original version, it's made in cahoots with the team from Whittaker's and uses the same recipe combining Lewis Road's permeate-free white milk and 5 Rolled Refined Creamy Milk Chocolate — just without the lactose. Lactose-intolerant chocolate milk lovers who missed out on the frenzy will be pleased to hear that it is said to offer the same taste that helped make the original a success.

Lewis Road Creamery's Lynette Maan says the company received several requests to expand its lactose-free range, with chocolate milk number one on the wish list.

"We are delighted to answer the call and provide an indulgent chocolate milk treat that also delivers on essential natural nutrients. We believe everyone deserves their chocolate milk moment."

Lewis Road says the removal of the lactose is achieved by the addition of the lactase enzyme that breaks it down.

Lewis Road Creamery's lactose-free chocolate milk comes in 300-millilitre bottles for $4.49. It's now available at supermarkets across the country.
