Win a One Month Yoga Pass at Power Living
Power Living's newly opened Wellington location is my idea of a yoga studio, realised.
A beautiful heritage building in Johnston street is where Power Living have chosen to open their latest outpost- the sun streaming in onto the native matai floorboards, mats hanging on the wall, and the candles and plants along the windowsills make for a space that feels immediately calming.
A respite from the busy thoroughfare of central Wellington, normally populated by suits and civil servants, the studio provides a calm space for your yoga practise- whether it's your first class or you've been practising for years. "It's all about building a community of nurtured individuals who feel confident and excited to come through the Power Living doors each week," says leader Jason Te Patu.
Power Living itself spans beyond just Johnston street- it's an operation with studios in Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne, as well as a dedicated 200 hour teacher program and a range of retreats and workshops. Founder, Duncan Peak works around a Vinyasa focus, within a "transformational PLAY practice." Their teachings work with both a physical and philosophical focus, affecting your physical and mental health positively. This holistic approach works for the thousands of yogis they've taught over the past 12 years.
The studio itself goes a long way toward forming an immediate community bond with those who use it. In addition to the large yoga studio, a space for members to curl up with cups of tea and hang out is available. The space also houses a store selling yoga clothing, many labels of which are exclusively stocked at Power Living.
A class at Power Living varies in style, with offerings ranging from Vinyasa (both heated and non-heated), Yin and Meditation. The heated classes see the studio's temperature turned up to 32 degrees, comparable to doing yoga on a tropical island. Muscles are loosened, you'll feel gloriously drowsy afterwards and the sweat is like nothing else. If you think Bikram hot yoga will be too much for you (42 degrees, anyone?) then try Power Living's heated Vinyasa. I plan on returning in the middle of winter- a taste of high summer for that one relaxing hour.
