Named after none other than old mate Fidel Castro, Fidel's Cafe is an institution of the Cuba Street scene. Known for its chilled out atmosphere, hearty meals and Havana Coffee, it has become an iconic hang-out and a welcome spot to find yourself the morning after a doozy on the town. It’s a place you go to knowing that your forks aren’t gonna match and brunch-time means you’ve got a bit of a wait on your hands, but that’s all part of the charm so you keep going back anyway.
The menu at Fidel’s has a loose Cuban theme, at times flirting with Mexican flavours, but you’ll still find all your favourite cafe classics. Vegetarians will be also pleased to find a number of dishes to get stuck into, with the nachos and pizzas definitely being worth a mention.
It’s not really fair to talk about the food at Fidel’s without paying homage to their mega-sized brioches. The flavours change each day so it’s always a bit of pot luck, but trust us, if you roll in and it’s raspberry and white chocolate day, hold onto your hats for an actual taste sensation.
It’s like that saying about always trusting a fat chef with your meal. Fidel’s has been around long enough to prove they know what they’re doing and you can guarantee they’ll be set in their upper Cuba Street spot for a good while yet.
