Overview
On the south side of Wellington lies the quirky little suburb of Lyall Bay — home to the largest and most surf-able beach in the area. And the newest arrival to the list of cafes and eateries is a cosy little spot named Good Dixie's.
Open seven days a week, Good Dixie's is welcoming locals for coffee, hot chocolate, smoothies and milkshakes, and a generous selection of cabinet goodies. The owners, Solomon Rose and Petra Parker-Price, reckon the coffee is pretty epic — it's supplied by High Noon Coffee Roastery, a small boutique roaster located 45 minutes northwest of Auckland at the base of the Kaipara Harbour. With that in mind, we ordered coconut flat whites, and some of the seriously good looking nibbles displayed at the front counter. We managed to grab the last Hedgehog Log (which we highly recommend, if they're still around when you get there), as well as a rocket and cheese scone and a Dizzy Dixie Slice. You also have a choice of bacon and egg pies, date scones, a variety of sarnies, fruit toast, wraps and chocolate fudge slices.
It seems like the locals approve of this cute little spot, located just across the road from the beach, in Onepu Road, as the line was out the door when we arrived. It's great for a takeaway coffee to take with you as you walk along the beachfront, but if you're lucky, you might be able to grab a seat at the big bay window at the front of the cafe. Summer will be a real treat, as they've managed to secure an ice cream machine and offer customers real fruit ice cream, to complete the beach experience.
No matter the weather, or day of the week, Good Dixie's has got you covered for whatever you're after.
