Winter is on its way, which means French fondue chalets and budget-friendly ski bundles are up for grabs. But, just before the cold hits for good, The Big Design Market will take over the Royal Exhibition Building with its 'Almost Winter' edition, serving up a seasonal showcase stacked with hundreds of fascinating stalls and experiences. Happening from Friday, May 22–Sunday, May 24, this truly massive event will feature more than 250 independent designers and more than 75 artisanal food stalls, with tickets for adults priced at $8 and kids under 12 free. Framing all these creations will be a stunning installation by Xue Fei Art — the creative practice of Elaine Li, a Melbourne-based artist inspired by nature, childhood memory and the subtle beauty found in everyday life. Hanging from the venue's soaring dome, her artwork titled 'Moon Dip' will make your visit even more special. In addition, Li has designed a dedicated kids' area, complete with badges and colouring sheets for the little ones to take home. In terms of featured designers, the options are seemingly endless. Highlights include the hand-blown, cold-worked pieces of Mariella McKinley Glass, the fully vegan women's footwear of e'serdiv, and ReRoped — a highly collaborative project that recycles old rock climbing ropes into climbing chalk bags. Then, you've got the small-batch table linen of Everyday Normal, the contemporary homewares of Printing Potter and the fine-leather goods of Saddler and Co, whose making their only appearance of 2026 at this year's Almost Winter event. Of course, the food and drink selection is just as good. L'Artisan Gourmet offers a range of artisanal French condiments and charcuterie, and Sad Girl Matcha serves up a heavenly product — including a gluten-free and nut-free option. Plus, Del Bocia will be in the house offering their hand-crafted grass-fed butter that blends Italian culinary traditions with the finest Australian ingredients, while Collingwood's Chotto Motto presents their much-loved chilli oil alongside a host of Japanese pantry products bound to level up your home cooking.
