Overview

The Marlborough region has more than 35 cellar doors, with the 150-odd wineries responsible for 76 percent of New Zealand's total wine production, so if you're a wine aficionado this is the place for you. We suggest forgoing the car and hiring a bike instead — one of the companies in Renwick or Rapaura will get you cycling and responsibly imbibing — then work your way through the Golden Mile.

There are eight cellar doors on the Golden Mile but about 20 all up in the area. Everyone has heard of the Marlborough sauvignon blanc but there are some pretty good pinot noirs, pinot gris, as well as chardonnay and a montepulciano. If you opt for a tour, the guides will share insight into the area and winemaking process as you cycle past vines and traverse quiet country roads. They are also happy to offer cellar door suggestions depending on personal preference — from organic and boutique producers to big name wineries and even lunch options.

For those who would rather it take it at their own pace, there's the option to make your own route on a self-guided tour. Either way, the bikes come equipped with a basket to load up with any purchases and, trust us, there will be plenty.
