Mountain Bike Sandy Point

Overview

Sandy Point is a headland covered in dunes and thick pine forest. For mountain bike enthusiasts, there are 17 different trails over 20 kilometres at a Grade 3, intermediate level. While it does offer twists and turns, there aren't lots of steep downhill sections. It's more like a slalom. If you're keen for a challenge, a trail with dips and tree roots abound, take the 15-kilometre bike ride from Invercargill past rivers and wetlands and lots of birdlife.

While you're in the area, be sure to check out Oreti Beach. The beach was featured in the film The World's Fastest Indian, which tells the story of Southland's motorcycling hero Burt Munro. The beach was a testing and racing site for Munro and his modified Indian motorcycle. In the 70s, Munro set a New Zealand open beach record, clocking 136 miles per hour. Yeah, just a little bit faster than a mountain bike.
