Overview

Founded more than 150 years ago, with the planting of an English oak tree, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens boasts an impressive, well-tended collection of century-old flora that is a delight at any time of the year. Every season has its highlights; spring with daffodils under every tree and swathes of cherry blossom, summer with the central rose garden in full bloom — a heady experience both for the scent and the multitude of colour — autumn is all golds and reds as the leaves change and winter, too, has the appeal of clean pathways to at least get outside and walk in nature.

Situated within the city centre of Christchurch, the gardens provide a much-needed green escape from the urban hustle and bustle for Cantabrians and visitors alike. With relatively flat terrain, a tea kiosk, toilets and an information centre, this stretch of parkland is a pleasure to explore. Since the gardens are open from 7am every day and free entry, you have no excuse. Go on, get among those beautiful blooms.
