Overview

After taking a break for a number of years, the New Zealand Spanish Film Festival is back at Academy Cinemas, and with 17 films on offer there's something for everyone.

Celebrating films from all over Latin America and Spain, it features some of the most talked about recently released Spanish-language films, including Ma Ma, said to be one of Penélope Cruz's finest-ever performances, and the award-winning cinematic journey through the Amazon; Embrace of the Serpent.

Oh, and if you are a big football fan, you won't want to miss the screening of Barça Dreams, delving into the 115 year history of one of the world's most beloved clubs, FC Barcelona.

Kicking off the festival this year is a romantic comedy, perfect for date night. Ocho Apellidos Catalanes (Eight Catalan Surnames) also known as Spanish Affair 2 was a box office hit in Spain last year - in fact, it took out the number one spot - and tells a rather playful tale of love and life following the characters from the extremely successful first film Ocho Apellidos Vascos. This is probably one of the most hyped Spanish films in recent history so get in quick if you want to secure tickets to this one.

Whether you are a native speaker and missing the comforts of home, keen to brush up on your Spanish language skills or simply want to impress your date, the Spanish Film Festival is all about immersing yourself in the Spanish language and the diverse cultures which speak it.
