Overview

Undoubtedly one of the best art events in the city, the City Gallery's latest Open Late (in association with Tuatara brewery) looks like an absolute banger. Billed as "art, music, film, books, beer, wine and food," next week's goes a fair way toward ticking off most of these.

Emily Perkins will discuss characterisation in books, with the City Gallery Book Club. On the book list are the tomes i Love Dick by Chris Kraus, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Role Models by John Waters.

Artists Yvonne Todd and Ronnie van Hout will explore dolls in art and life with curator Robert Leonard.

To round out the evening, Aldous Harding will perform a live solo set. The gothic folk artist Harding is on the brink of setting off for an extensive tour of Europe, America and Australasia. After her recent signing to 4AD (ex-NZ) and Flying Nun (NZ), this will be her last appearance in the country. Her performances have been described as 'striking that rare balance between fragility and full-blown possession,' and we're looking forward to hearing the humour and hubris of her gentle laments and sinister torch songs alike.
