Overview

It's the most performed opera in the world and with good reason. La Traviata has it all, reckless love, family strife and tragedy.

Verdi’s heartfelt tale centres around the beautiful but fragile courtesan Violetta who is forced to give up the man of her dreams. It's musical storytelling at its best, recounted in a cascade of instantly recognisable tunes performed by Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

This lavish New Zealand Opera production is sung in Italian with English subtitles. It stars Australian soprano Lorina Gore as Violetta Valery with Scottish baritone David Stephenson as Giorgio Germont and Australian tenor Samuel Sakker as his son Alfredo. It also reunites the creative team behind the 2013 Madame Butterfly production; director Kate Cherry, production designer Christina Smith and lighting designer Matt Scott.
