Stage one of Newmarket's new $790 million shopping mall opened last month with the first 40 stores — including Coco Republic and its L'Americano café concept and circus-themed arcade bar Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq — unveiled to the public.

The pricey transformation, which will see the site formerly known as Two Double Seven nearly triple in size, is the work of Scentre Group — the Australasian-owned arm of Westfield.

Steamrolling towards its scheduled Christmas completion date, the final touches are now being put on the "world-class retail and lifestyle destination". On 3 October, the airbridge across Mortimer Pass connecting the centre's two buildings will open to welcome 20 new fashion and food retailers. Some of those in the level 3 foodcourt include another edition of Malaysian restaurant Selera, plus Mad Mex, Daruma Ramen, Zeta Greek, Tank Juice, Poke House, among several others.

Shoppers will certainly be spoiled for choice when the space being called "Auckland's first rooftop dining precinct," opens on 10 October. Rooftop on Broadway has been tipped to include views of the city and year-round dining options.

Among those will be Inca — a smart casual Peruvian-style eatery from Nic Watt and Darren Johnson — Asian fusion restaurant White + Wong's and its Sardine cocktail bar, and Something & Social — a new casual dining concept complete with a dedicated gin garden. Elsewhere, free-range chicken rotisserie Bird on a Wire will open its fifth eatery and specialty Asian supermarket Tai Ping will open its tenth Auckland store.

New venues include the country's first The Bavarian restaurant and bar from Australia's Rockpool Dining Group. The hospitality group operates 30 outlets of the German-style bier hall across the ditch. The oversized venues are known for their massive litre-sized steins of German mainstays like Löwenbräu, Stiegl and Hofbräu, plus hearty Bavarian dishes like crispy pork knuckle, crackling pork belly, gourmet sausages, giant pretzels and loaded schnitzels.

Start planning some long slurpy city lunch breaks because legendary ramen chain Ippudo also joins the lineup. Ippudo has long been a reigning global gold standard of the Japanese dish, since Shigemi Kawahara opened his first humble ramen store in Hakata, Japan in 1985. The chain can now be found across Japan, the US, Europe and Australia.

Further newly announced openings in the precinct include Bodrum Market, Corner Burger and Island Gelato.

Australian department store David Jones will headline the five-floor retail experience, which will also include a Countdown supermarket, Lego Certified Store and Event Cinema complex. Further new shopping services will include valet parking, a styling suite and hands-free shopping.

Westfield Newmarket is to be complete by the end of 2019. For more information about the development, visit westfield.co.nz/newmarket.
