A new cultural festival is set to take over Tāmaki Makaurau in July. Elemental AKL was developed by Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development to make the city a more vibrant and compelling place to visit and spend time in during the rain-soaked winter. More than 40 events have now been unveiled for the new winter festival, including a lineup of light shows, culinary events and cultural performances.

A roster of events has been scheduled to line up with Matariki, the Māori New Year. Also part of the region's dedicated Matariki festival, Great Barrier Island is hosting a series of astronomy-themed events, Takapuna's Smales Farm will see the return its three-day light festival, Haiku-inspired projections will light up the Civic Square in Manukau, and an interactive light playground will illuminate Albert Park for three days.

Food is another major element of Elemental AKL with masterclasses, curated menus and local wine and food shows on the menu for food lovers.

The Craft'd Wine + Spirits Festival will host more than 40 boutique wine and spirits producers, offering masterclass sessions, food trucks and entertainment. Eat Drink Love Ponsonby includes a series of special events and will see international guests take over spaces along the strip. Fans of Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol and Chanel can participate in themed dining experiences at different Auckland restaurants; Devonport's 'dining corridor' will host a progressive dinner experience spotlighting native ingredients and traditional cooking methods; and Elemental Feast will see restaurants plate up unique dishes or menus using local ingredients and inspired by the elements. The full program of eateries will be revealed on 1 June.

The entertainment lineup will see Auckland's full-scale replica of the second Globe Theatre stick around for its their first winter season. At Silo Park there will be an all-wheels illuminated parade in celebration of Matariki, award-winning theatrical event War Horse from the National Theatre of Great Britain will play at The Civic, and Te Taumata Kapa Haka will share the dynamic art form of kapa haka with exhilarating live performances.

Elemental AKL will across Tāmaki Makaurau from 1–31 July. For the full program, head to elementalfestival.co.nz.
