Overview

Pocket diaries and wall planners and the ready, the Royal New Zealand Ballet has revealed the full lineup of performances for their 2016 season, including contemporary works that have never set foot in the country, the world premiere of The Wizard of Oz, and the return of the company’s signature work.

The season will be the first full programme under the guidance of Italian choreographer and RNZB Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia, a gentleman who has graced stages across the globe. Ventriglia feels the debut run is “an expression of what is vital in this world: balancing tradition with innovation.”

The choreographer has also signed the company up for a run at New Zealand Festival, what will be their first appearance in 12 years. Speed of Light will include a bill of three works: Alexander Ekman’s parody of contemporary dance, Cacti; William Forsythe’s In the Middle, an ‘in-your-face’ piece with an electronic soundtrack; and Somewhat Elevated which was originally created in 1987 for the Paris Opera Ballet.

After failing to make the stage in Florence six years ago, Francesco Ventriglia’s interpretation of The Wizard of Oz will make its world premiere in Wellington, as well as nine pitstops around the country. Bypassing the traditional musical accompaniment of Pink Floyd, the piece will be set to music by French composer and pianist Francis Poulenc.

Following its translation into a feature film and an international tour, RNZB’s Giselle will return to grace New Zealand stages. The classic piece overseen by former Artistic Director Ethan Stiefel has since become the signature work in the company’s repertoire. The year will end with a tour to Asia of Liam Scarlett’s take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
