Overview

Regional parks and reserves across the city will play host to three months of free entertainment this summer as Auckland Council’s 2016 Music and Movies in Parks programmes kick into full swing.

From January 15 through to March 26, a total of 24 big ticket blockbusters and family friendly flicks will play out underneath the stars of Tamaki Makaurau. Local residents will have the opportunity to load up the chilly bin, roll out a picnic blanket and enjoy silver screen favourites like: Shrek at Brains Park in Kelston, Grease at Mt Eden’s Takahi Reserve and Ghostbusters at Coyle Park beside Pt Chevalier Beach, among plenty of others.

For 22 years open air concert series Music in Parks has been a highlight of the summer event calendar. This year’s program features 26 free gigs, spanning genres from hip-hop to rock, electronica, jazz, opera and country.

Pop songwriter Benny Tipene will swoon audiences at Takapuna Beach Reserve alongside rising electronic artist Maala; Ponsonby’s Myers Park will be the place to be for country lovers with a lineup boasting Tami Neilson, Delaney Davidson and Coco Davis; the Auckland Jazz Orchestra will show off their chops in the Domain Band Rotunda, and The Black Seeds and Weird Together will lead the afternoon-long festival George in the Park at Freemans Bay’s Western Park.
