Overview
It's been five years since a former petrochemical storage facility and gritty fishing wharf were transformed into the thriving community space we know as Wynyard Quarter. The waterfront destination celebrates the milestone this Saturday 6 August with an extensive day-long programme of exhibitions, activations and all the things it's become famous for.
Running from 7am to 5.30pm, the festivities include interactive activities like pop-up yoga, 18-hole mini golf, flax flower weaving, lantern making and the construction of a gargantuan newspaper hut. Miniature steam ship SS Puke will embark on koha sailings throughout the day; the country's first Pop-Up Sauna will be open for those looking to get hot and sweaty; and a professional 'cycleologist' will be on hand to give personalised bike assessments.
Early birds will be treated to a performance by the Auckland Choral community's Dawn Chorus on the Viaduct Events Centre Balcony at first light, while further entertainment will kick off at 12pm with performances from psych-country musician Dave Weir, multi-intrumentalist Anthonie Tonnon and gypsy-folk act Reb Fountain.
In addition to the number of restaurants and bars along North Wharf, street food gathering Food Space will provide nourishment, rounding up vendors Dixie Barbecue, Double Dutch Fries, Got Pasta, Kraken Crumpets, Langos Hungarian Fried Bread, Mr Dog Frites, Yummy Thai and Toro Churro.
Outdoor movie theatre Silo Cinema will also make a one-off appearance - should the weather behave - with family-friendly feature Inside Out projected onto Silo 7 at 3.30pm.
Wynyard Quarter's 5th Birthday Programme takes place Saturday 6 August from 7am - 5.30pm.
