Following a hit season across the ditch last year and fresh from a sell-out UK Tour, the hit rock musical based on Green Day's iconic album American Idiot is coming to New Zealand for a limited run.

Hailed as a bold and explosive production, the Tony and Grammy award-winning show features every song from the punk band's eponymous album, along with a number of tunes from Green Day's follow-up record, 21st Century Breakdown.

It's the tale of three lifelong mates, torn between remaining in their safe, aimless ruts, and challenging the status quo to embark on a journey of self-discovery.

The musical contains hit songs including 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', '21 Guns', 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' and the title track 'American Idiot' from the band's 2004 album. It also features the unreleased love song 'When It's Time'.

A 15-strong cast plus a four-piece live band will take the stage at Auckland's Civic Theatre this October with direction and choreography by Racky Plews and musical supervision from Richard Morris.

American Idiot will open at Civic Theatre on Thursday 10, October. Tickets go on sale from Thursday, 13 June.
