Overview

There’s no doubt you’ve probably heard of Record Store Day - the annual celebration of independent record stores around the world. But, have you heard of Cassette Store Day?

Conceived by a group of record labels based in the UK, Cassette Store Day is intended to recognise the value of Compact Cassettes as a music format. Between the '70s and the late '90s, the cassette was one of the two most common formats for prerecorded music. It took a huge hit with the introduction of its nemesis, the Compact Disc, in the '90s and was even removed as a word from the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011 to make more space.

September 27, 2014 marks the second annual Cassette Store Day. This year, the event will expand from the UK and Europe to the US and beyond. Last year’s event included more than 50 special cassette releases from the likes of The Flaming Lips, Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Haim, and more.

Stores and labels can sign up between June 30 and August 15 at the Cassette Store Day website.

Still no word on whether there will be an 8-Track or Mini-Disc Store Day.
