Overview

After facing demolition to make way for an apartment block, independent music retailer Real Groovy Records has revealed the location of its new store.

The largest record store in the country announced the predicament about the current Queen Street location earlier in the year, prompting an uproar in the music community about the future of the quarter-acre vinyl paradise.

While it may be bad news for the iconic building at number 438, things are looking up for Real Groovy who are set to move across the road to 369 Queen Street; a space that was previously the Salvation Army auditorium.

Talking to Cheese on Toast, Real Groovy owner Chris Hart said, “The new shop is over two levels of retail. The auditorium on the ground floor is a massive space: it’s the same kind of scale as the old store, but way groovier, absolutely perfect for us. And there’s a huge basement where we’ll be putting our vinyl department, giving it the room to grow that it needs.”

The old store at 438 Queen Street will continue to operate as usual through Christmas, remaining open until Sunday 17 January, 2016 until wrecking balls hit. The new store will open its doors on Thursday 7 January, 2016.
