Wellington has long been considered the home of barbecue reggae; Hamilton of bogan rock; Dunedin of jangly guitar pop. While those genres may prove to be the most commonly exported out of their respective cities, a new interactive map shows that they aren't exactly the preferred listening styles of those within the community.
Global music streaming service Spotify has unveiled the listening preferences of nearly every corner of the planet through an interactive musical map. The site analysed nearly 20 billion tracks to produce the guide of localised listening trends for 1000 cities. The maps are based on music that is distinctive to each area – meaning songs that are listened to more frequently in specific cities that are not frequently listened to in others.
Top global trends show that hip hop is one of the most commonly listened to genres and that local artists are naturally more popular in the areas where they reside.
Closer to home, the North Island has revealed its penchant for a cross-pollination of genres with Dunedin roots/rock/reggae band Six60 dominating Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington. Meanwhile, the band’s hometown is more obsessed with the relatively similar sounding group Summer Thieves. Christchurch aren’t shy on the repeat button for folk-pop group Avalanche City.
