Overview

Hotel DeBrett truly has to be one of my favorite spots in Auckland to wine and dine. An old hostel which was transformed into a luxury boutique hotel a few years ago thanks to a multi million dollar refurbishment – the space is simply exquisite.

Bordering High Street and O'Connell, the hotel houses unique, functional spaces within, including restaurant  Kitchen Restaurant and the famous Housebar. Each are distinct and worthy destinations in their own right, frequented by tourists, after work crowds and fashionistas alike.

I visited a few weeks back to review the award winning Kitchen Restaurant – a light bright space with striking lighting  from the lounge’s open fire and the many thoughtfully placed candles, through to the lights which look more art installation than functional fixture.

We are politely greeted and seated by an enthusiastic waiter who clearly knows a thing or two about the wine list. After striking up a conversation I ask the for his interpretation of the restaurant’s vision, his reply; “relaxed sophistication - bistro dining with fine dining service.” And I agree.

The food lived up to its impressive surrounds – we started with a delightful Ravioli of wild rabbit, followed by the grilled Pacific Ocean tuna with smoked oyster mayonnaise black quinoa and fennel  and crisp skin Hapuka with Cloudy Bay Clams, caraway sprouts and Bombay spiced potato. Delicious, fresh flavours and imaginative combinations.

I whole heartedly recommend a visit and there’s always plenty going on. Pop in for an after work wine at the Housebar or a cocktail whilst listening to live Jazz on a Sunday.

Hotel DeBrett really sets the standard for fine food, service and entertainment in Auckland. And hey, if you enjoy yourself a bit too much to drive, there are always the hotel rooms!
