Overview
Heading into Northcote Tavern is not too different to jumping in a time machine and heading back a few decades. The beautifully restored old pub has been around since 1884 and looks as though it will be staying put for a long while yet. Only a stones throw from the ferry stop in Northcote Point, jump off the ferry and enjoy a few pints of Lion Red in the sun on the Tavern’s huge grassy outdoor area. There’s even a Petanque court and enough room for the kids to kick a ball around.
The are two different indoor bar areas. There is Callans which is a sports bar. Nothing fancy here. A great spot to watch the footy, but don’t come in here with the kids, or on a hot date. Unless of course your date or kids are into pokie machines, the TAB, and the slight aroma of cigarettes and working men.
The other bar is called Highlander. Obviously a bit of a Scottish influence going on. The walls are filled with weapons, trophies, family shields and other oddities. Available to order here are meals from the tiny kitchen around the back of the Tavern known as Point 37. There’s nothing too crazy going on with the menu, prawns, fresh fish, tasty burgers, and lamb racks. Our pick would be fish and chips ($22) enjoyed in the sun, and washed down with something cold.
Come here on a sunny afternoon to make the most of it. It's x-factor lies in its awesome outdoor area and harbour views.
