Soul Bar and Bistro
Located in the heart of Auckland’s Viaduct, with arguably one of the city’s most enviable terraces, we are pleased when greeted and seated in front row seats with views over the harbour.
Soul Bar & Bistro has become somewhat of an institution since its celebrated launch in 2000, frequented by local suits, ladies who lunch, the who's who of Auckland and tourists alike.
Located in the heart of Auckland's Viaduct, with arguably one of the city's most enviable terraces, we are pleased when greeted and seated in front row seats with views over the harbour. Fairy lights, elegant table settings and a subtle Jazz playlist equal instant ambience.
The menu matches the view with an emphasis on fresh seafood, so I take cues from our proximity to the water and start with their hero 'very famous' entree – the Salt and Pepper Squid with almond skordalia and smoked chili oil. It's not often you get squid cooked to perfection but this was pretty close, living up to its title. Well-seasoned, tender and not too oily with a zesty aioli.
The seafood theme continues into the main course with the Whole Flounder, topped with lemon, capers, toasted hazelnuts and a side of Broccoli. Simple, but with the perfect balance of flavour and textures, letting the fish do the talking. All matched with a delightfully light, fresh bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio
The service? Professional, knowledgeable and friendly.
Soul Bar & Bistro lived up to its mighty reputation as one of Auckland's loveliest, liveliest bistros with a wide-ranging menu which delivers the goods. Mondays don't get much better than this.
