Overview

The concept of a 'freehouse' is a rarity in Auckland however the premise of the central city establishment Spitting Feathers is designed to fulfil exactly that.

A freehouse is by definition a [British] pub that is owned independently of the breweries that supply it. Spitting Feathers seeks to provide this to its patrons, with "no brewery ties, no corporation determining staff or what you can or cannot drink". The goal seems to be a 'No-BS' approach to its offerings, with simple service and decent beer.

Spitting Feathers is a peaceful getaway from the bustling CBD environment outside. There are plenty of bar leaners, tables and couches, as well as a small covered outdoor area. This pub is perfect for business meetings and 'man-dates'.

The bar was formally the Wyndham Street Bowling Club, transformed to its current state after a fire gutted the building with the place refitted from scratch. It was established two years ago and has been designed with the sole purpose to drink 'proper pints, proper beers and enjoy what bars are supposed to be about'. The décor and general simplicity of Spitting Feathers truly complement this ambition. Without distinct British imagery blanketing the bar, it's about as close as you get to an English pub, with a contemporary touch.

There is a great range of drink and food offers available most nights, including $6 tap pints all weekend and 'Thirsty Thursdays', offering a range of discounts on beers, food and other drinks. The tap beer includes a range unfamiliar to Aucklanders with British drops Carlsberg and Carling available.

Its sister establishment 'The English Corner Shop' is based in Onehunga and provides all the beers that are available at Spitting Feathers, as well as an array of other British delectables.
