The Ten Best Cakeries in Auckland

Where you can have your cake and eat it too.

While the humble bakehouse and their trusty custard squares will always hold a place in our hearts, the new cakeries on the block are where the baked magic truly happens. In the last few years we have seen a rise in the boutique cafes and eateries selling a little more than your average chocolate brownie and carrot cake.

Excluding the full blown cakeries specialising only in made-to-order occasion cakes, the hunt was on for some of Auckland's best baked (and unbaked) single serve treats.

    The Little Cake Kitchen

While only open during the week, the wares of the Little Cake Kitchen can also be found at outlets such as Farro for when the weekend calls for something sweet. I tried their melt in the mouth semolina and orange mini loaf and their red velvet cupcake.

Every Saturday and Sunday morning in Parnell, La Cigale opens up to tempt us with all things delicious. What mustn’t be overlooked are the small cakes and pastries located on the far corner counter. Freshly baked each morning, you can’t go past the fresh filled chocolate éclairs or the almond croissants.

    The Gourmet Gannet

Warm bread and warm welcomes were enough to get me in the door and that was before I even glanced by eyes upon the delights on sale. Everything freshly baked from bread to plum tarts by Allison. The perfect plum and frangipane tart was amazing but the lemon and coconut gluten free loaf needs to be tried by everyone. If you are not a local, the Gourmet Gannet is worth the drive out.

    Bluebells Cakery

The Hillsborough based cakery is a must visit for sure. Best visiting during the week when the cabinets are fully stocked or on Saturday mornings well before lunchtime so you don’t miss out. While famous for its beautifully presented cakes and cupcakes, the slices I feel are the un-sung heroes. You cannot go past the generously sized caramel and macadamia nut slice.

    Foxtrot Parlour

When walking past on a lazy weekend morning you will see an endless stream of colourful brunch plates making their way to tables. If you pop inside you will also see the piles upon piles of hand baked treats overflowing the counter area. Known for their injectable doughnuts, the cakes on offer are also well worth diving into.

    Bread & Butter Bakery

With a master German baker at the wheel, it is no surprise that everything that comes out of the kitchen is beautiful. From breads to pastries, Bread and Butter has it all. The long front cabinet is always stocked with glossy tarts, dusted pastries and pretty little delights. Having to choose from the vast selection is the only fault I can think of.

    The Sweet Eatery

For those whom gluten is foe The Sweet Eatery is your saviour. For those whom gluten is a friend you should get amongst anyway because otherwise you’ll be missing out. Through the grape vine of social media this wonderful cake producer was discovered. Usually based out at the Oratia or Coatesville Farmer’s Market, they sell cookies, cookie pies and cakes by the slice. Their made to order cakes can also be purchased online.

    Little and Friday

Recommended that you go with an empty stomach, before and after a run, up a mountain, carrying bricks. The endless front counter of delight is what dreams are made of. Freshly baked raspberry doughnuts, sweet lemon cakes and beautiful savoury tarts and sandwiches lined up all the way to the till. The problem with Little and Friday is that everything looks amazing but the generous portion sizes and decadence of each item knocks you out for the count.
