Overview
A Thousand Hills is a journey from the heart of Africa to the bottom of the South Pacific. This universal story is loosely based on the life of Francois Byamana and his friendship with New Zealand Red Cross volunteer Bob Askew.
It's set in the months following the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, during which time close to a million Rwandan Tutsi were killed. This followed a calculated policy by the extremist Hutu people who took over the government and encouraged the active extermination of Tutsi in Rwanda.
Drenched in music and spirits of an ancient past, it's an adventure into a vast landscape of myth, history, politics and redemption. It captures the heart of an African life, a new beginning and the consequences of a New Zealander trying to make a difference in a shattered world.
