Overview

A master of the art of movement, Len Lye is one of New Zealand's most celebrated artists. A man ahead of his time, Lye's experimental films and kinetic sculptures continue to fascinate and delight more than 80 years on. Lye was a pioneer in both fields and is highly regarded internationally for his unique vision of the world.

This summer Mangere Arts Centre - Nga Tohu o Uenuku presents Len Lye Agiagia, the first showcase of Lye’s work in South Auckland. Taking its title from a Samoan word which means ‘natural billowing movement’, Agiagia reflects the Pacific landscapes that inspired Len Lye’s work and his life-long passion for movement.

Curated by Paul Brobbel (Acting Len Lye Curator, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery) and James Pinker (Senior Programme Leader, Arts and Culture, Auckland Council), the exhibition includes experimental film, kinetic sculpture, drawing and photography - with a focus on the artist’s early work during the 1920s.
